Boat Maintenance Tips For a Successful Fishing Season


Getting your boat ready for the fishing season is one of the most important things you can do before you head out on the water. Regardless of whether you’re freshwater or saltwater fishing in or around Saskatoon, you can use these boat care tips to prepare your boat for the upcoming boating season.


Clean the Boat


One of the first things you need to do is to clean the boat out after the winter season. You may find mildew on the upholstery, spots on the glass, or damage to the live well. This is also a good chance to look at the hull of the boat to determine if there are any repairs, such as cracked fibreglass or corrosion, that need to be handled. You should also clean the outboard motor and ensure it’s in good shape.


Inspect the Boat's Engine


Without an engine that’s in good shape, you won’t be going too far. Before you take the boat out on the water, check the engine. Pay close attention to the fluids, belts, filters, cables, and hoses. Replace any that are damaged. If the fluids are still good for use, you may only have to top them off.


Check the Electrical System


Take the time to look over the electrical system in the boat. This includes the communication system, batteries, wires, and fuses. Pay close attention to fraying or other signs that there are repairs necessary. This is also a good time to check the trolling motor if the boat has one, as well as any interior lights.


Prepare the Safety Equipment


All safety equipment should be checked and placed in the appropriate places in the boat. This includes the fire extinguisher, life jackets, flares, first aid kit, and anything else you carry onboard to help during an emergency. You should check this before each trip, especially to ensure that you have at least one life jacket for each passenger.


Set the Fishing Gear


A fishing trip will only be successful if you have the proper fishing gear for anglers. Get the rods, reels, nets, fishing line, and tackle boxes ready. You can grab the bait on the way to the dock if you’re going to use live or perishable bait. As you’re packing it, make sure it’s all in good working order so you can enjoy your trip.


Grab the Documentation


Get the documentation you need if you encounter the authorities. This includes your boat registration, proof of insurance, and any licenses you need. Be sure to pack these in a waterproof pouch so they will remain in good condition if they fall into the water or get wet while you’re fishing.


Get the Boat Trailer Ready


Finally, you need to check the trailer to ensure it can transport the boat to the dock without issue. Pay close attention to the lights, tire pressure, rollers, and pads. Replace or repair anything that needs attention.


Once you have everything together for your fishing trip, take the time to get snacks and beverages together so you can enjoy your time on the water. You should also have sunscreen and anything else you may need to keep yourself safe while you fish.
