Motorcycle Maintenance 101: Essential Tips for Long-Term Bike Health

Like your car and other appliances in your home, it's crucial to regularly maintain your motorcycle to prevent accidents and repairs and to extend its service life. A few maintenance tasks can include checking the tire pressure, lubrication, air pressure, pressure gauge and fluid levels. You can also avoid expensive replacements for the parts if you know how to properly maintain your vehicle. Read this short guide and let us know if you have questions.

Inspect the brake system: For motorcyclist’s safety, check your brakes as often as possible. Check the brake fluid, brake pads and even the brake rotors.

Maintain the carburetor: One of your maintenance tasks is to tune and clean the carburetor, as well as replace the gasket. Cleaning should be done every six months to a year. Also, spark plugs must be replaced regularly, depending on the health of the fuel system.

Inspect the motorcycle tires: Check the motorcycle tires regularly, ensuring they're safe for driving. Replace them if you see structural damage or if you've been using them for at least five years. Don’t forget to also check the tire pressure.

Change the engine oil: As motorcycle owners, part of regular maintenance is to check the oil level and change the engine oil between 1,000 to 3,000 miles, depending on the make and model of your motorcycle. Motorcyclists need to regularly replace the oil filter or every time you replace oil.

Check the battery life: To save a motorcycle battery, we recommend disconnecting it if you won't be using your motorcycle for a while, like in the winter. Just don't forget to recharge it every two months. For old batteries (4-year old batteries), it might be better to get a new replacement. Don't forget to also keep the battery terminals clean.

Do a visual inspection: Part of motorcycle maintenance is to regularly check if your bike is in good condition or if it needs service. Look for any signs of leaks and contact a professional if you spot something unusual. Examine the moving parts for any wear and tear or damage. Never ignore an issue to avoid costly repairs or replacements, or even accidents. Inspect your bike regularly and before going on a long ride for your safety. Better yet, have a motorcycle maintenance checklist to know which parts you need to inspect each time.

Read the owner's manual: The manual contains important information about how to operate and maintain your motorbike. Always refer to it if you're in doubt or if you need effective maintenance tips for your motorbike. Feel free to also contact your manufacturer if you have further questions.
