What is the Difference Between a 4-wheeler and an ATV?

If you’re looking into off-road vehicles, you’ve probably noticed the terms four-wheeler and ATV. While the main difference is four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, there are other differences you should consider before forking over your hard-earned cash. If you're confused about acronyms, we put together this short guide to help you understand the main difference between a four-wheeler and an ATV.

Recreation Or Utility?

Your off-road vehicle needs depend on two primary factors: the types of terrain you’ll be travelling through and what you want to do with the vehicle. Do you need a workhorse for an off-grid project? Or a weekend toy for fun and trail riding? Considering factors like rugged terrain, off-road load hauling, and rough terrain trail riding, your vehicle should be a brand like Kawasaki, Honda, Polaris, etc., brands that have been making these vehicles for decades and have established reputations.

Utility Task Vehicles

  • A utility task vehicle (UTV) is a bigger all-terrain vehicle used for moving people, equipment, and supplies. Some dealers might refer to a UTV as a utility terrain vehicle. However, "task" and "terrain" are interchangeable.

  • A UTV typically has a steering wheel and safety features like seat belts. UTVs are motor vehicles that can go off-road in rough or rugged terrain.

  • UTV has either one row of side-by-side seats or two rows of side-by-side seats.

Recreational All-Terrain Vehicles

  • The single-rider ATV has handlebars and a straddle seat like a motorcycle.

  • Recreational ATVs handle rough terrain and have a small storage and hauling capacity.

  • ATVs have better maneuverability than UTVs, so they are excellent for trail riding.

  • The four-wheeler recreational ATV has big round tires at low pressure with treads that grip rough terrain.

4WD or AWD?

UTVs and ATVs have all-wheel drive and two or four-wheel drive, respectively. The main difference is four-wheel drive has two axles connected to a drive train. Engage both axles for 4WD. All-wheel drive means each wheel operates independently with separate power so that each tire’s tread can dig in. Naturally, AWD is the best solution for rough terrain.
